Nigeria’s Super Eagles have clinched a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 (AFCON) final after a thrilling 4-2 penalty shootout victory against South Africa.
Captain William Troost-Ekong and Kelechi Iheanacho were among the key contributors, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali making crucial saves during the shootout.
Despite initial doubts surrounding the fitness of striker Osimhen, who eventually led the team admirably, Nigeria faced a resilient South African side.

Both teams had their chances in regulation time, with Nwabali showcasing his skills between the posts.
The second half saw Nigeria seizing the initiative, with Osimhen winning and Troost-Ekong converting a penalty to put Nigeria ahead.
However, South Africa quickly responded with a penalty of their own, leveling the score.
As the match progressed to extra time, Nigeria created several opportunities, but the deadlock remained unbroken. South Africa’s Grant Kekana was sent off, but Nigeria couldn’t capitalize on the advantage.
Ultimately, it was Iheanacho’s winning penalty kick that secured Nigeria’s passage to the final.
They will now await the outcome of the match between hosts Ivory Coast and DR Congo for their opponent in Sunday’s final showdown. #AFCON
