Opatola Victor, who serves as the counsel that represented the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the federal government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the Ministry of Finance, has sharply blasted Bola Tinubu for his intentional false claims made during his Independence Day national broadcast regarding the clearing of the “Ways and Means” debt.
In his address, Tinubu asserted that the debt had been resolved; however, Victor emphasized that this statement is misleading, highlighting that the over 30 trillion Naira debt remains unresolved and continues to strain the nation’s economy.
Victor’s remarks come as Nigeria marks its 64th Independence anniversary, a time when many citizens are increasingly questioning the country’s financial management and governance.
He said “It only securitised that debt, and by so doing converted trillions of Naira worth of Federal Government debt to Nigeria’s debt.
This means a debt that the federal government was supposed to pay, a debt that the national assembly elected by the people never approved it borrowing, a debt that the National Asembly couldn’t even determined how it was spent, a debt that the Nigeria people couldn’t manage or determine how it was spent; it is such debt that has now been converted into a public debt that Nigeria and Nigerians must pay.
So the 30 thrillion naira that Tinubu mentioned in his Independence day speech that it cleared, was definitely a lie. It was an intentional technical language used to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that a 30 trillion Naira debt was actually cleared.
Victor further said that the Federal Government in a desperate bid to be seen as an efficient and performing Government should cease and desisit from make bare face lies to its citizens.
However, he has called for greater transparency and accountability from the government, urging officials to avoid using technical jargon that obscures the reality of the nation’s debts and ongoing economic struggles.
