Nigerian Army Interrogates Major General Umar Muazu Muhammed for Stealing $1,476,200

A Special Court Martial convened by the Nigerian Army convicted Major General Umar Muazu Mohammed, the former Group Managing Director and Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, guilty of 14 of 18 count allegations that were all in violation of service statutes.

They are all susceptible to service discipline. The charges include theft, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unauthorized diversion of Army property, among others.

The collection of $1.045,400, paid by shipping companies for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty at Marina No. 6, Victoria Island, Lagos, was one of the fees.

Major General UM Mohammed was wheeled into the courtroom for the court martial in a wheelchair, but the court’s president, Major General Myan, claimed that the accused had undergone all necessary medical examinations and that they had all shown that he was healthy enough to face trial.

Col. BA Oguntayo (Ret.) served as the prosecution’s main attorney, while Olalekan Ojo, SAN served as the prosecution’s lead attorney.

Major General UM Mohammed was also found guilty of stealing $430,800 from a Nigerian Army Domiciliary account at Unity Bank in Abuja for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty, Marina, VI, Lagos.

Furthermore, Major General Mohammed was found guilty of removing and seizing N74 million from a N75 million payment made for a Nigerian Army property in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The general was found not guilty on claims that he sold Army property for N200 million in Lagos and stole another N750 million from the N2.5 billion acquired from banks and subscribers for an Army housing complex in Asokoro, Abuja.

He was also cleared of charges related to fabricating a Deed of Agreement document in order to seize another Army property in Lagos.

It is anticipated that the Special Court Martial, which is presided over by Major General Kames Myam and includes seven other Major Generals as members and a Brigadier General serving as Judge Advocate, will read out the punishments to the defendants by Tuesday of the following week.
