Nigerian Army University Professor Dies In Boko Haram Captivity, Nearly One Year After Abduction

Professor Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Nigerian Army University, Biu, has died in the custody of Boko Haram insurgents, nearly a year after he was abducted in Borno State.

The professor was kidnapped on March 3, 2025, along the Damaturu–Buni Yadi–Biu road, a corridor plagued by insurgent activity.

He was reportedly held in captivity for several months before falling ill and eventually dying while in the custody of the terrorists.

In his honour, a Salatul Ga’ib (funeral prayer in absentia) was held on Thursday at the Ngomari Old Airport Juma’at Mosque, near his residence in Maiduguri, drawing academics, friends, and sympathizers.

A family relative, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that El-Jummah had remained in Boko Haram captivity from the time of his abduction until his death, praying for divine mercy upon him.

The relative declined to say whether ransom was demanded, while attendees at the funeral prayer described him as a respected scholar whose loss would be deeply felt in academic and local communities.
