Nigerian Governors Forum to Meet in Abuja Over Proposed Minimum Wage

The 36 state governors in Nigeria will meet in Abuja today to discuss the proposed new minimum wage.

The governors had previously rejected the federal government’s proposal of N62,000, arguing that some states would need to borrow funds to pay salaries if this amount were implemented.

However, organized labor is still demanding a minimum wage of N250,000.

The governors’ emergency meeting follows the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision to postpone its ruling on the minimum wage issue on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, informed journalists that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) could not reach a decision due to the involvement of local governments, state governments, the federal government, and the organized private sector.

Halima Ahmed, the acting Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), told Daily Trust that the governors would convene on Wednesday at 7pm in Abuja to discuss the matter.
