A motion to make the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), National Examinations Council (NECO), and West African Examination Council (WAEC) free for all students has been rejected by Nigerian lawmakers.
The motion, moved by Anamero Dekeri, called on the federal government to make WAEC, NECO, and JAMB free for this academic session, but the lawmakers kicked against it.
This motion arises at a moment when Nigerians are continuing to express their disapproval of lawmakers allocating significant funds for their official vehicles.
Dekeri claims that the elimination of fuel subsidies has allowed the government to save almost N17.2 billion every day, but the proposal was rejected.
He had suggested allocating a portion of these savings to help families that are having difficulty paying for exams.
Nevertheless, lawmakers opposed his proposal, claiming that their constituents should adopt schools and cover the costs.
The topic of whether more could be done to assist students and families who are having financial difficulties paying for exams has spurred a discussion regarding education funding in Nigeria as a result of this decision.
