A 26-year-old Nigerian Masters student, Somtochukwu Okwuoha, has been found guilty by a jury for making terrorist threats against Dundee University.

Okwuoha claimed to have enlisted the support of ISIS to bomb the university and revealed plans for a chemical attack on the city.

The international energy studies student faces seven charges and has been remanded in custody pending sentencing next month.

During the trial, witnesses recounted how Okwuoha informed university staff about his intention to carry out mass murder on the Dundee University campus.

The threats included assertions of having a military background, bomb-making capabilities, and the potential unleashing of a deadly virus on the city.

Retired director of student services, Keith Mackle, revealed that serious concerns arose in the autumn of 2021 when staff received emails containing terrorist threats.

One of the messages ominously stated, “Expect a massive bomb explosion at the University of Dundee. I have contacted ISIS terrorists to plant bombs on campus. I can assure you that staff and students will die in great numbers. 9/11 will be a joke compared to what will happen. Blood will spill and flesh will be scattered.”

Accommodation officer Shane Taylor testified that Okwuoha accused him of racism and expressed plans to wipe out Scottish people as revenge.

Somtochukwu Okwuoha, currently a prisoner in Perth, faces charges including threatening to murder university staff, planning terrorist activities, using biological weapons, disclosing staff details to international authorities, and claiming to have planted bombs.

The court also found him guilty of threatening to behead police officers and detonate bombs at Dundee University.

The sentencing, scheduled for next month, will be presided over by Sheriff William Wood, who will also consider the Crown’s motion for Okwuoha’s deportation to Nigeria.
