“Nigerians Are Killed Every Day, Yet Government Is Not Doing Enough; If It Can’t Protect Its People, We Have Right to Call on International Community” — Obasanjo Challenges Tinubu

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has sharply criticised Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, saying the government is failing to protect its citizens.

Speaking at the Plateau State Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival 2025, Obasanjo stressed that the Federal Government and leaders at all levels must fulfil their responsibility to protect lives rather than appease criminals.

“Nigerians are being killed every day, yet the government is not doing enough. If it can’t protect its people, we have the right to call on the international community to do what our government has failed to do,” he said.

The former President highlighted that with today’s advanced satellite and drone technologies, criminals should have no hiding place. He recalled that even before he left office, Nigeria already had the capacity to identify and track perpetrators, questioning why such tools are not being deployed more aggressively.

Obasanjo also warned against normalising or comparing tragedies, stressing that every Nigerian life lost to criminality is a national shame. He urged citizens, security agencies, experts, and international partners to work collectively to tackle insecurity.

His remarks reflect growing public frustration amid widespread kidnappings, communal attacks, and insurgent activities across several states, raising concerns about the federal government’s ability to maintain law and order.
