Instead of cheering Bola Tinubu in a celebratory mood, Nigerians were recorded on camera chanting “Minimum wage, Jagaban wage” as Tinubu waved at the crowd at Eagle Square, Abuja during the 2024 Democracy Day celebration parade on Wednesday.
Earlier, it had been noted that Tinubu, in his 25th Democracy Day speech, stated that his government had “negotiated the new minimum wage in good faith” and planned to “soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine the agreed-upon wage for the next five years or less.”
Tinubu also urged Nigerians to endure the economic reforms his administration has implemented, despite the prevailing inflation and hardships.
He emphasized his commitment to never abandon the Nigerian people.
Addressing the recent negotiations with organized labour regarding the new national minimum wage, Tinubu stressed the importance of achieving both political and economic democracy, encouraging the nation to continue striving for a brighter future.

He highlighted the necessity of reforms to establish a stronger foundation for growth.
The Tinubu administration and organized labour, led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have been in a deadlock over the upward review of the national minimum wage from N30,000.
While the government has proposed a N60,000 minimum wage for workers, the labour unions are demanding N494,000 and have threatened to resume their suspended nationwide strike if the government fails to meet their demands.
