Despite 39.6 Million Hectares of Arable Land, Nigerians Continue to Fight, Struggle for Rice – CUPP Laments

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the recent tragic incidents of stampedes in Nigeria, where dozens of lives were lost in the desperate struggle for rice.

In separate incidents reported across the country, at least 63 people have died in events held in states such as the South East, South West, and North Central regions, including Abuja.

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Police Command reported the recovery of about 10 bodies, with several others hospitalized. Similarly, in Anambra State, at least 22 residents of Okija community lost their lives during a rice distribution event. Over the past few days, a carnival stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed the lives of more than 35 individuals, mostly children.

CUPP, in a statement signed by Chief Peter Ameh, its national secretary, highlighted the country’s worsening situation.

He stated, “A country blessed with 39.6 million hectares of arable land, capable of feeding its population and even exporting surplus, is home to citizens who die in desperation, struggling for a bag of rice,” the Coalition said in a statement signed by Chief Peter Ameh, its national secretary.

“This incident is a shameful indictment of our nation’s failure to harness its vast resources to ensure the basic needs of its citizens are met.

“It is a scathing commentary on the incompetence and corruption that have become the hallmarks of our governance.

“The fact that people have to fight for a bag of rice, a staple food, is a clear indication that our agricultural sector is in shambles.

“With 39.6 million hectares of arable land, Nigeria has the potential to be a breadbasket, not only for its citizens but also for the West African sub-region,” he added.
