‘Nigerians Have Lost Hope in APC, PDP’ — El-Rufai

Nasir El-Rufai, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Kaduna State, says the two major political parties in Nigeria, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have completely lost the trust of Nigerians.

El-Rufai, who recently defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), claimed that the ruling APC has abandoned its founding ideals, while the PDP has failed to offer any credible alternative. According to him, Nigerians are now looking for a new path, and they see that hope in the SDP.

“It seems clear to me that most Nigerians have lost hope in both the APC and PDP and are looking for a credible alternative,” El-Rufai said.

Since announcing his move to the SDP on March 10, El-Rufai says he has been overwhelmed by the positive reaction from the public. “Since I joined the Social Democratic Party on 10 March, I have been gratified by the reception of Nigerians and love expressed for the party,” he said.

He attributed this surge in goodwill to the SDP’s legacy and the credibility of individuals recently joining its fold.

However, the former governor warned that the APC may attempt to infiltrate and destabilize the SDP, just as it allegedly did with the Labour Party and PDP. “So there has been an influx, but as part of that influx, we also expect that the sitting government and ruling party will try to inject viruses into the party to create crisis. As it has done or they have done in the Labour Party, NNPP, and PDP,” he said.

To prevent such sabotage, El-Rufai noted that the SDP is being deliberate in vetting new members and ensuring only trusted individuals are given leadership roles.

His comments come at a time when defections and realignments are intensifying ahead of the 2027 elections, and just as Tinubu’s administration continues to face backlash over economic hardship and political instability.
