Nigeria’s power grid has collapsed again, marking the second time in less than 24 hours, leading to a nationwide blackout.
On Monday evening, the power grid went down, disrupting both domestic and business activities across the country. Despite the billions of naira invested in the energy sector, Nigeria continues to suffer from erratic electricity supply.
However, less than 24 hours after the first collapse on Monday, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the grid had collapsed once again.
“Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17 hrs, which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.
“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored,” the electricity firm said.
Earlier, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced that power outages experienced by Nigerians on Monday evening had been restored in some of its service areas.
Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, is the country’s political hub. Since Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, the nation has faced several power grid collapses.
Reports showed that areas like Deidei, Suleja, Lugbe, Kuje, and others had their electricity restored on Tuesday around 5:15 a.m.
Customers under AEDC were informed that the power disruption was due to the collapse of the national grid.
In a statement on its Twitter account on Monday, the company confirmed that the system collapse occurred at around 6:58 p.m.
“Be rest assured that we are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon the grid stabilises,” it said.
