Former United States Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley has emerged victorious in the Republican primary in Washington, DC, becoming the first woman in US history to win a Republican primary.
Haley’s triumph, however, proved symbolic, given the capital’s predominantly Democrat-leaning nature, with approximately 23,000 registered Republicans in the city.
Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina, Haley secured all 19 Republican delegates at stake in Washington, bringing her nationwide total to 43, while former President Donald Trump maintained a substantial lead with 247 delegates.
The data revealed that Haley captured 62.9% of the vote, overshadowing Trump’s 33.2% in the nation’s capital.
The win is viewed as largely symbolic due to the limited number of registered Republicans in Washington, DC. Local party officials reported 2,035 Republicans participating in the primary, emphasizing the city’s Democratic stronghold.
Haley’s national campaign spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, remarked, “It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos.”
