Supreme Court Bench: NJC Commences Screening Of 22 Justices

National Judicial Council (NJC) has initiated the screening process for 22 justices nominated by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) to fill vacant positions on the Supreme Court Bench.

The screening, currently underway at the NJC Boardroom, involves a high-level assessment with several justices in attendance.

The panel’s deliberations are anticipated to span approximately one week, culminating in the selection of 11 justices from the 22 nominees.

This rigorous process aims to appoint justices who will assume the responsibilities left vacant since the retirement of Justice Amina Augie in September 2023.

Earlier this month, reports disclosed that the FJSC nominated 22 justices from the Court of Appeal to the NJC for elevation to the Supreme Court.

The distribution of nominees includes six from the North-Central region, two each from the South-West and South-South regions, six from the South-East, and two from the North-East.
