The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed frustration over the rapid approval by the Senate of a 300% salary increase for judicial officers, contrasting it with the delay in addressing the minimum wage for workers.
Parallel Facts reported that the Nigerian Senate approved a 300% salary increase for judicial officers, just days after Senate President, Godswill Akpabio proposed maintaining the N30,000 minimum wage for workers. The bill, which Chief Bola Tinubu presented, aims to enhance the salaries, allowances, and benefits for judicial officers in the country.
Taking to its official X handle, NLC criticized the government for not applying the same urgency to the plight of ordinary workers as it did for the judiciary.
They pointed out that the last Minimum Wage Act expired in April, leaving millions of Nigerian workers without updated wages.
They further underscored the disparity in how swiftly different sectors’ financial needs are addressed.
The statement reads, “See the speed of approval, Why not use the same speed for Nigerian workers?”
“The last minimum wage Act has expired since April,” the statement added.
