The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denounced the raid on its headquarters in Abuja by security operatives on Wednesday, August 7.
In a statement released by Benson Upah, the Head of Media and Public Relations, the NLC reported that heavily armed men invaded the Labour House around 8:30 pm, well after working hours.
Upah stated that the NLC condemns “this new low in security operations in Nigeria” and will not tolerate such actions.
His words, “If this harassment continues, the Nigeria Labour Congress will not hesitate to call on its members to stay home until their safety and security are assured.”
Upah further noted that some operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, along with individuals wearing black t-shirts, presumably from the State Security Services (SSS), stormed the 10th floor of the NLC headquarters.
He mentioned that the operatives arrested the security officer on duty and took him to the second floor, demanding that he produce the keys to the offices.
Ujah added, “When he told them that he had no such keys on him, they broke into the 10th floor and ransacked the bookshop on the 2nd floor carting away hundreds of books and other publications.
“The invading troop claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGoveranance protests.”
Noting that the act by the Police and the SSS is a new low, Ujah said the armed security operatives failed to present any legal document permitting them to invade the premises of the NLC.
