The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a directive for labour members nationwide to stage picketing actions at all Labour Party offices across the country, citing the ongoing political turmoil within the party.
In a circular addressed to the chairpersons of all Nigerian Labour Congress State Councils/Political Commissions dated March 19, 2024, titled “Picketing All Labour Party Offices Nationwide,” the NLC outlined its decision.
The circular was jointly signed by Comrade Titus Amba and Comrade Chris Uyot, Chairperson and Secretary of the NLC Political Commission, respectively.
The picketing action is prompted by the unilateral decision of the Labour Party’s National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, to convene a National Convention of the party.
This decision, made amidst financial impropriety and disregard for the leadership of the NLC, has spurred the Nigerian Labour Congress to take action.

It reads: “We bring you fraternal greetings from the Nigeria Labour Congress. Sequel to a meeting of the NLC National Political Commission and the leadership of the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees, which took place virtually on the 19th of March 2024, it was resolved as follows:
“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the Nigerian Labour Congress State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.
“In view of the soon-to-be-held all-inclusive national convention of the Labour Party, the NLC State Councils and the Nigerian Labour Congress Political Committees should immediately embark on a statewide mobilisation of workers to join the NLC Political Commission and the Labour Party.
“The NLC State Council and State Political Committees should work with our civil society allies, students, traders and professionals to ensure that the picketing and mobilisation are successfully executed.”
Parallel Facts reported on March 16, 2024 that the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress passed a vote of no confidence on the Labour Party Chairman, Julius Abure, over allegations of corruption made against him.
But reacting the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) on March 17, called on the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, to resign from his current position if he must contest for the national chairmanship of the party.
The LP accused Ajaero of desperately seeking to replace its embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure.
