The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has lamented what he perceives as a partisan distribution of federal government palliatives.
While 35 states received their allocations of rice through their respective governors, Kano State’s share was notably handed over to leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), bypassing the state’s administrative leadership.
Kwankwaso, who has been in Kano for the past week, expressed his deep disappointment via a tweet, calling the action “a gross insult to our constitutional democracy.”
He criticized the move as an excessive display of partisanship, urging President Tinubu to intervene and stop what he described as a “naked derailment of democracy.”
Adding to the political tension, Kwankwaso highlighted another issue affecting Kano’s governance and security.
He pointed out the unusual frequency in the change of the State Directors of the Department of State Services (DSS), with three directors being posted and reposted within just two weeks.
This rapid turnover, according to Kwankwaso, has undoubtedly compromised the security framework of Kano State.
The former presidential candidate under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, called for immediate action to address these concerns, emphasizing the need for transparency and adherence to democratic principles in the distribution of government aid and in administrative appointments.

His comments have sparked a debate on the intersection of federal governance and state autonomy, particularly in the context of political affiliations influencing state affairs.
“For the last one week I have been in Kano, and sadly I noted with great disappointment the Federal Government distribution of rice palliative to 35 states all through their Governors, except Kano State in the whole federation. Kano’s share was handed over to APC stalwarts to handle.
“This is a gross insult to our constitutional democracy and driving partisanship too far. I call on Mr. President to immediately halt this naked derailment of democracy.
“I have also noted with great concern that within a span of just two weeks, 3 different State Directors of DSS were posted and reposted out of Kano and we are still counting. Without doubt this is negatively affecting the security of Kano State,” he tweeted.
