Nyesom Wike, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the current FCT minister, has reiterated his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking on Saturday, Wike expressed no regrets in backing Tinubu over the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, justified his decision by emphasizing his belief that it was the South’s turn to produce the next president of Nigeria.
Wike articulated, “I stand for it. I have no regret at all and that is why I will continue to support the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
“I have no regrets when I stood by with my colleagues and friends that the presidency must go to the south,” the minister emphasised.
“There was nothing I was not offered. But I said no. That is why I will continue to support the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. As I am going back home, I am going with the satisfaction that my friend is back.”
Wike’s move comes after losing the PDP presidential ticket to Atiku during the party’s primary held at the National Stadium.
The rift between Wike and the PDP leadership, chaired by Dr Iyorchia Ayu, further escalated, leading the former Rivers governor to mobilize four of his colleagues to form a protestant group within the APC.
Political analysts suggest that the emergence of Wike’s G-5 governors played a significant role in Atiku’s defeat in the 2023 polls.
