Nigerian Activist Rinu Oduala has condemned the death of a teenage Christian following years of illegal detention, describing the incident as a reflection of impunity under Bola Tinubu administration.
David Tarfa, a 13-year-old Christian orphan, died in the custody of the Kano State Government last week following years of illegal detention.
The 13-year-old Christian orphan who was detained by authorities in Kano State, Nigeria, not because he committed a crime, but as a result of a 2019 raid on his orphanage, Du Merci Orphanage, due to allegations of illegal operations and religious, ideological disputes.
Despite a 2025 court order mandating the release of all Du Merci orphans, David remained at the Nassarawa Government Orphanage where he reportedly suffered from severe medical neglect.
Witnesses stated that he complained of intense stomach pain for several days but was ignored by staff, eventually passing away alone in his bed.
Following his death, a major controversy erupted when Kano State officials allegedly attempted to rush a Muslim burial for the teen, even though David was a known Christian and the Ministry of Women Affairs had previously admitted he never converted.
The attempt was reportedly only halted when representatives from the Du Merci orphanage and international human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe intervened.
In a significant move to ensure accountability, the Kano State Attorney General has advised that a full autopsy be conducted at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
This decision was made to prevent potential manipulation of the cause of death as the ongoing legal battle between the state and the Du Merci orphanage continues.
In her reaction, Rinu wrote on X stating that, “Nothing is too small or too big for Tinubu to do away with,” criticizing authorities for failing to protect citizens and ensure justice.
