In a move to elevate the quality of technical expertise in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the league’s governing board has recently issued a directive requiring all top-flight coaches to obtain the Confederation of African Football (CAF) B Licence.
This transformative decision was officially announced by NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, who highlighted its significance in enhancing the overall performance of clubs within the league.
The mandate is expected to usher in a new era of coaching excellence by compelling coaches to undergo the necessary training and acquire valuable skills that will substantially enhance their contributions to player development.
The NPFL’s commitment to raising the bar in terms of coaching standards reflects its dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a more competitive and captivating football environment.
This innovative measure signifies a pivotal moment for Nigerian football, with a vision to continually enhance the technical prowess of its coaches, ultimately benefiting players, clubs, and the league as a whole.
“One of the areas of the league we seek to improve in the new season is the area of technical performance of our teams through the players, and this can only be achieved by having competent managers on the bench,” Owumi told NPFL Media.
“For this season, we will only allow Head Coaches with a minimum qualification of the CAF B Licence to sit on the bench. This may be reviewed upward next season.
“The idea is to encourage our coaches to improve themselves through higher certifications by participating in reputable courses.”
The 2023-24 NPFL season will kick off on Saturday, September 30.
