The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ogun command, has cautioned Nigerians against the indiscriminate use of social media to prevent falling prey to criminal activities, especially kidnappings.
Dyke Ogbonnaya, the spokesperson for the NSCDC Ogun command, emphasized the dangers of exhibiting personal achievements and lifestyles on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
He noted that 40 percent of kidnappings were facilitated through interactions on these platforms.
Ogbonnaya emphasised that some Nigerians usually use the platforms to display achievements such as new houses, cars, expensive clothes, watches and fake expensive lifestyles.
He stated, “These materials being displayed are clues to criminals.
“These criminals mostly fish their victims through social media platforms using job offers, travelling opportunities and dating sites.
“Facebook and Instagram are the most common platforms used in social media kidnappings,” he added.
Ogbonnaya said that kidnappers had continuously devised new techniques to catch their victims.

He warned Nigerians against greed, adding that it had led many into kidnappers’ dens unexpectedly.
The NSCDC spokesperson condemned the rising incidents of kidnappings and robberies in the country and assured that the NSCDC would continue collaborating with the police to address these issues.
He urged Nigerians to provide useful information on criminal hideouts to security agencies, stressing that the cooperation of the public is essential to winning the battle against crime.
“The security agencies need the cooperation of Nigerians to win the battle,” he stressed.
