Following the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in Abuja, Nyesome Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has said the federal government is not to blame but the chairpersons of the NUT.
Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been on an indefinite strike since January 15, demanding the payment of their allowances and arrears.
The strike is a continuation of an earlier one that was suspended in 2023, but the issues were not resolved within the agreed six weeks.
The FCT Minister, has held an emergency meeting with the chairpersons of the six area councils and security agencies to address the situation. He has blamed the chairpersons for the ongoing strike, saying that they have not fulfilled their responsibilities.
“Recently, the NUT has embarked on strike. It is not because of our fault. It is the council chairmen’s fault because primary schools are under the purview of the area councils.”
He also said that the ministers were not to blame for the strike, as it was not their responsibility.
“Again, it will look as if the ministers are doing nothing, but that is not our responsibility,” he said.
Wike said that he had invited the striking teachers for a meeting to resolve the problems. He urged the chairpersons to wake up to their duties and end the strike. “Council chairmen should know that they must wake up to their responsibilities,” he said.
