NYSC Members Bemoan High Food Prices in Camps

The 2024 Batch A, Stream 1 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) participants, who commenced their service this February, have voiced discontent regarding the skyrocketing prices of goods in the Mammy market.

Mammy markets are conveniently located in every NYSC camp, catering to individuals who prefer alternatives to the camp-provided meals.

Jefferson, a Corps member stationed at the Bauchi NYSC Camp, recently highlighted on TikTok that the excessively high prices at the Mammy markets have compelled the majority of Corps members to line up for camp-provided meals.

He stated, “Everyone wants camp food due to the unaffordable prices in Mammy markets. Those who brought thousands to the camp have exhausted their funds within two days.

Now, food is scarce for all Corps members. We are even fighting to be in the queue and receive very little food.”

Another Corps member from the southern region of the country reported that the camp coordinator cautioned Corps members against depending solely on camp-provided meals, citing that they are not intended to meet everyone’s needs adequately.

She said, “Our camp coordinator even told us to consider camp exit because the camp cannot feed everyone.”

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) initiated the mobilization of Corps members for service on February 13, 2024, for Batch A Stream 1. Corps members mobilized are anticipated to dedicate three weeks to their designated states of deployment.
