Impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, on Thursday presided over a controversial plenary session with only four lawmakers in attendance, amid heightened political tension and a show of force at the Assembly complex.
Obasa’s return to the chamber came shortly after his security details were reinstated, while those of the substantive Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, were withdrawn.
The embattled former Speaker, who had been impeached by 36 lawmakers on January 13, made what many described as a “triumphant return” to the legislative floor. However, Meranda was notably absent from the session.

Reports indicate that security operatives allegedly forced open the chamber doors, enabling Obasa and his loyalists to gain access.
The plenary, held with the presence of Hon. Nuraini Akinsanya, Hon. Yinka Eso, Hon. Jubreel Kareem, and Hon. Noheem Adams, proceeded despite the absence of over 26 lawmakers.

Those lawmakers, who boycotted the session, instead gathered at the Assembly’s garden to reaffirm their February 17 vote of confidence in Meranda.
Addressing the sparse Assembly, Obasa emphasized the crucial role of the legislative arm in Nigeria’s democracy.
However, his return, reportedly facilitated by armed men and suspected political thugs, has raised questions about the political stability of the Lagos Assembly and deepened the divide among its members.
In a report by Punch, A lawmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, insisted that the Assembly would not recognise Obasa’s leadership.
“He was not elected as Speaker by his constituency. For nearly a decade, we endured his authoritarian style of leadership. Enough is enough, and we are not backing down,” the lawmaker declared.
