Lagos Speaker, Obasa Tightens Grip on Agege, Installs Son as Council Boss After Elected Chairman’s Sudden Resignation

The son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has been confirmed as the new Chairman of Agege Local Government following the resignation of the substantive chairman, Tunde Azeez, commonly known as Disco.

Obasa’s emergence on Wednesday, however, did not come as a surprise to many political observers, as Azeez had been visibly absent from council activities for months.

Azeez proceeded on medical leave shortly after the new administration was sworn in on July 27, 2025, leaving Abdul-Ganiyu—then the Acting Chairman—to oversee mobilisation and grassroots engagement.

In a letter read by the Leader of the House, Adeshina Haruna, Azeez formally resigned, citing persistent health challenges that had made it difficult for him to perform his duties.

Following the reading of the resignation letter, lawmakers in the council unanimously voted to confirm Abdul-Ganiyu as the new Chairman of Agege Local Government.

The legislators defended their decision, noting his contributions to the council since assuming office in an acting capacity, as well as the need to prevent a leadership vacuum.

“His appointment is a testament to his credibility and experience, and a signal of the council’s commitment to ensuring governance remains uninterrupted and responsive to the needs of the people,” the lawmakers said.

They also commended Azeez for his service and wished him a full recovery.

Azeez’s resignation comes barely two months after he went on medical leave, paving the way for Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa’s transition from Acting Chairman to substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government.

His takeover has stirred controversy among opposition parties, which claim it reflects a pre-arranged political plan.

Recall that the move to make Obasa’s son the APC candidate during the July 12 local government election was opposed by some stakeholders in the local government.

Abdul-Ganiyu, who had earlier shown interest in contesting for the chairmanship during the build-up to the 2025 local government elections, was initially dropped after opposition trailed his candidacy.

Following the opposition, Hon. Tunde Azeez was nominated, while the young Obasa emerged as the Vice-Chairmanship candidate.

Barely a month after the swearing-in, the Chairman, who was even visibly absent during the electioneering campaign, wrote a letter to the legislative house to proceed on medical leave.

Some opposition leaders said making Obasa’s son the Vice-Chairman was a “carefully scripted succession” following the outcry that trailed his candidacy as the party’s flag bearer.

However, Hon. Azeez tendered his resignation, paving the way for Obasa’s son to take over.
