Obasanjo Calls for Indigenous Solutions to Africa’s Challenges

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has challenged African leaders to develop indigenous solutions to the various challenges the continent is currently facing.

He said this when speaking to a group of students and young people from several African nations at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.

The delegation was led by Osisiogu Osikenyi, the president of the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU), and included student leaders from Ethiopia and the Tigray Region.

The students were paying Obasanjo a “thank you” visit after he helped the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF) reach a lasting cease-of-hostilities deal in Pretoria in 2022.

Obasanjo asserted that “no problem in Africa is too great for us to solve,” mentioning problems including unrest, instability, youth unemployment, a lack of empowerment, a lack of skill development, and general poor governance.

He emphasized the significance of taking into account the distinctive characteristics of Africans while developing and implementing practical indigenous solutions.

He commended the African Union (AU) for setting an example for the continent’s difficulties by resolving the civil war between Tigray and Ethiopia.

“It is a great lesson for us to know that whatever may be our problem—political, economic, social—in Africa, we can solve it if we go about seeking solutions rightly,” Obasanjo added.
