In a notable recognition of his contributions to the nation’s progress, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour party, was awarded the Political Icon of the Year 2023 by The Sun Awards on Saturday February 17, 2024.
The accolade, presented amidst the backdrop of Nigeria’s enduring challenges, aims to celebrate individuals fostering positive change in the country.
Acknowledging the honor, Obi expressed gratitude for the award, emphasizing its significance in highlighting the efforts of those striving to realize a better future for Nigeria. He dedicated the recognition to the marginalized and impoverished citizens grappling with daily hardships, stating, “I dedicate this award to the impoverished Nigerians facing uncertainty about their next meal.”
Obi’s address also extended appreciation to the Nigerian youth, recognizing their unwavering support and commitment to the vision for a New Nigeria. He remarked, “My political journey is about building a better society,” urging unity across tribal, religious, and party lines to overcome governance challenges and forge a path towards progress.

This isn’t the first time Peter Obi has been honored by The Sun Awards. In 2006, he made history as the first-ever Governor to win “The Sun Man of the Year Award,” further solidifying his legacy as an outstanding figure in Nigerian politics.
During the award ceremony, Obi was joined by key figures from the Labour party, including Arc. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State, and Deacon Ken Pela, the 2023 gubernatorial candidate for Delta State.
