Obi Condemns Kidnapping of Fouani MD and Killing of Over 10 Nigerians in Sokoto

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria. In a statement, Obi addressed the recent kidnapping of the Managing Director of Fouani Company, Mohamed Fouani, along with three other Lebanese nationals in Lagos. He also condemned the brutal attack in Dudun Doki village, Gwadabawa local government area of Sokoto State, which left over ten people dead and many others abducted.

Obi emphasized the gravity of the current security situation, noting that the use of boats for kidnappings and demands for ransoms in foreign currency represent a dangerous new trend. “The use of boats for kidnap, and demand for ransoms in foreign currency, marks a new and more ugly dimension to the heightened insecurity we are combatting with, and have worsening socio-economic implications,” he said.

The recent incidents highlight the severity of the security crisis in Nigeria. On a day meant for peace and reflection, gunmen attacked Dudun Doki village, causing significant loss of life and trauma. Obi urged the government and security agencies to take stronger measures to address the crisis and prevent further attacks. “We must strive to put an end to these terror attacks and the attendant loss of lives,” Obi stated. He called for intensified efforts to rescue Fouani and other abductees safely.

Obi also extended his sympathies to the families of the victims and called for national solidarity in facing these challenges. “May Almighty Allah accept our prayers for our nation on this day, show us mercy and intervene in our situation,” he added.

In his appeal, Obi urged for a united front against the perpetrators of these heinous acts. “I continue to urge that more concerted efforts be made to safely rescue Mr. Fouani and other many abductees from the hands of their captors,” he said. He also highlighted the importance of holding those responsible accountable and implementing robust security measures to prevent future incidents.
