Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, paid homage to the late Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Okechukwu Mbonu, highlighting his pivotal role in a groundbreaking medical initiative.
He reminisced about a critical juncture during his gubernatorial tenure when the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council threatened to shut down the state-owned university’s faculty of medicine due to the absence of a functioning teaching hospital.
In a fervent appeal to the Council, Obi championed the construction of a teaching hospital within two years, a proposition initially met with skepticism. With steadfast determination and the collaboration of esteemed medical professionals, including Prof. Mbonu, the Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, was erected in record time.
