Obi: I’m Running for President in 2027, Not Anyone’s Running Mate

Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and prominent opposition figure, has confirmed that he will be contesting for the presidency in 2027, dispelling speculations about playing second fiddle to Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking during a live appearance on Sunday Politics today, Obi made it clear that his name would be on the ballot in the next general election.

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he said.

Obi’s comment came amid growing rumors suggesting he might accept a vice-presidential slot under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) standard-bearer, Atiku Abubakar, who has contested in nearly every presidential election since 1993.

But the former Anambra governor dismissed the speculation outright, stating that no such conversation had ever taken place. “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C,” Obi stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party and maintained that he remains part of the opposition-led coalition, championed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aimed at unseating Tinubu in the next election.

“I am part of the coalition, which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” Obi added.

Peter Obi’s declaration positions him as a leading contender in the evolving 2027 race, with strong grassroots support and a reputation for frugality and accountability that continues to resonate across many parts of the country.
