Peter Obi Mourns Victims of Rivers Oil Explosion, Blames Widespread Hardship

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has publicly expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims of a tragic oil explosion in Rivers State. The incident, which occurred at an illegal oil tapping point, claimed the lives of over 20 individuals.

Obi took to his X page to share his sentiments, attributing the cause of the disaster to the pervasive hardship in the country. He stated, “Last night, I received very troubling reports of an explosion from an illegal oil tapping point in Omoku, Ogba/Egebema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, where over 20 persons reportedly lost their lives.”

He further explained that preliminary reports suggest that the incident occurred when local youths breached an operational pipeline in the area, leading many to gather and scoop fuel. This tragic event underscores the desperate measures individuals are driven to due to the high level of poverty in the country, a situation Obi attributes to the uncaring and insensitive attitude of the political leadership.

Obi, known for his frugal lifestyle and business acumen, has been a vocal critic of the current state of affairs in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for change, stating, “We can end such sad occurrences by providing jobs for our teeming youths and by lifting people out of poverty.”

As he mourns the loss of precious lives, Obi extends his heartfelt sympathies to the affected families, praying for eternal rest for the deceased and healing for the wounded.

This incident is not an isolated one. In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed several similar tragedies resulting from illegal oil bunkering and refining. These activities have led to severe environmental pollution and numerous fatal accidents. The latest incident in Rivers State adds to the growing list of casualties, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
