The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, during his thank you tour in the United States, spoke with Noire TV about the state of Nigeria and the possibility of a merger with Atiku Abubakar and the PDP for the 2027 elections. Obi made it clear that his focus is on Nigeria’s progress and not just political power.
“I commend him and I am grateful for his statement, especially where he said that he will support me if the election is zoned to the southeast. On the issue of merger, I have always said that as long as any merger or coming together is for a better and new Nigeria, for governing properly, I am for it. If it is just a merger for election or state capture, I am not part of it,” Obi stated firmly.
He emphasized his dedication to seeing Nigeria work, especially for the poor. “I am not desperate to be president, I am desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor because we have a lot of potential. So if the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly and unlock prosperity, I am for it at any level,” he added.
Obi expressed his trust in Atiku’s sincerity, acknowledging Atiku’s support if the election is zoned to the southeast. “I cannot doubt Atiku’s sincerity with supporting me. If the purpose for coming together is similar, I don’t have a problem,” he said.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about political alignments and strategies for the upcoming 2027 elections. Obi’s stance highlights his commitment to genuine governance rather than mere political maneuvering. His focus remains on transforming Nigeria and addressing the needs of its citizens.
