Weak Institutions, Corruption Fuel Drug Trafficking — Peter Obi Says Nigeria Must Restore Integrity to Governance

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised serious concerns about the growing infiltration of Nigeria’s courier and delivery services by drug traffickers, warning that it reflects deep institutional weaknesses in the country.

In a post on X, Obi noted that criminal networks now exploit logistics companies to distribute narcotics across Nigeria, a development he says is “apparently aided by corruption and poor regulation that have turned the enforcement body into a joke.”

He observed that despite the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) repeatedly warning about this trend, the problem continues to grow, apparently fueled by weak oversight and corruption that have undermined the agency’s effectiveness.

Obi warned that drug trafficking remains a serious societal and international threat that destroys families, fuels crime, and corrodes the conscience of the nation.

Highlighting the broader impact on Nigeria, Obi stressed that a country already battling insecurity, youth unemployment, and hunger cannot afford a drug-normalized culture.

He called on Nigerian authorities to implement stronger oversight and enforce accountability, saying, “Nigeria will only heal when character, truth, and responsibility return to governance.”
