Leave Pulpit and Help Rebuild Nigeria’s Values — Peter Obi Urges Clergy at Enugu Synod

Peter Obi has urged the Nigerian Church to step beyond sermons and take up a practical role in rebuilding the country’s collapsing values.

Obi made the call at the Fourth Enugu Diocesan Synod, where he spoke on the role of the Church in youth empowerment and community development.

He said Nigeria is suffering from alarming levels of valuelessness, moral decay, rising rascality and a diminishing sense of responsibility.

He stated that these problems persist because the nation has allowed its values to collapse.

He said the country now rewards dishonesty while integrity is ignored and noted that even among highly educated citizens, the erosion of ethics is clear.

Obi argued that the Church must reclaim its mission as society’s moral compass.

He said practical engagement, such as youth mentorship, skill acquisition, community projects and value-driven programmes, can help young people rediscover discipline and character.

He reminded the Synod that Nigeria’s failures do not come from ignorance but from the refusal to embrace the right values and development-focused practices.

He said the Church and other serious religious bodies must lead the task of shaping ethical behaviour and strengthening societal character.

He added that the Church must “move from the pulpit to the people” to inspire a new generation and drive social renewal.

Nnanna Damian Anazodo responded to Obi’s message, saying, “Leaders like this can only be planted by God once in a generation…”

UptownOfLagos questioned why Obi behaves differently from typical politicians, asking, “Why don’t you want to be an irresponsible politician?”

Another user, PETER OBI LAST BORN (@ikangbo_gabriel), praised him, saying, “Your Excellency Peter Obi, Thank you for this powerful and courageous message to the Church and to the nation…”

Chazak Magen said churches should take on mentorship and skills training, adding that government reform and accountability remain essential.

Alphamale commented that the Church needs “louder impact” rather than louder microphones.

THE HOPE (@judecstephen) described Obi’s remarks as a diagnosis of Nigeria’s moral disintegration, saying faith must translate into action.

Mercy (@LaVidaMercy) criticised the Church for contributing to moral collapse and said words alone cannot save the country.

The reactions reflect growing frustration with the moral decline under Bola Tinubu’s administration and increased support for value focused civic engagement championed by Obi.
