Leadership About Service, Gratitude, and Love for People Not Resentment or Bitterness — Obi Charges Soludo

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Governor Charles Soludo to demonstrate humility, gratitude, and compassion in his leadership, following what he described as an “unfortunate and bitter” outburst by the governor.

Speaking at the recently concluded Guild of Editors meeting at the Naval Base in Abuja, Obi congratulated Soludo on winning a second term and called on him to respond to his victory with grace, rather than resentment.

The appeal comes after Soludo sparked controversy during his certificate-of-return ceremony, when he mocked critics, referring to Peter Obi as a “frustrated politician without a club” and accusing him of harming the state’s education system.

“I felt compelled to respond because staying silent would have been misinterpreted,” Obi said. “On a day meant to celebrate his certificate of return, instead of showing gratitude to God and extending magnanimity, the governor displayed bitterness. That was deeply unfortunate.”

Obi clarified his involvement in the recent Anambra gubernatorial election, insisting that his engagement was limited and strictly in public events where he was invited. “I attended only three public events with the Labour Party candidate.

At no point did I mention anyone by name or meet with community leaders to discuss candidates. There was nothing I said to justify the controversy,” he explained.

Reflecting on Election Day, Obi said he acted to maintain peace amid disruptions. “I saw irregularities that could have escalated into chaos. When outsiders attempted to cast votes in our community, I urged calm and fairness.

Leadership is not about political victories; it is about protecting the integrity and dignity of the people, even under pressure.”

Using a football metaphor, Obi addressed Soludo’s remarks directly: “If gubernatorial candidates are in the first division, I am in the Champions League. I ran for Vice President in 2019 and for President in 2023, winning 11 states and Abuja. My record speaks for itself.”

Obi also reflected on his achievements in Anambra State, noting that only he and Jim Nwobodo became governors in their forties, and he was the first to serve a second term. “I have no personal issue with Governor Soludo.

I pray that God grants him greater heights, which I hope will inspire humility, compassion, and genuine concern for the people,” he added.

He concluded with a call for servant leadership: “We must recognise the mercies God grants us. Leadership is not about resentment or bitterness; it is about service, gratitude, and love for our people.”
