Nnamdi Kanu Should Never Have Been Arrested; His Conviction Created Avoidable Distraction From Economic Hardship, Insecurity — Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has reacted to the conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as an avoidable distraction that comes at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with severe economic hardship and insecurity.

In a post on X, the former governor of Anambra State said the conviction should compel every well-meaning Nigerian to pause and reflect.

He argued that Kanu’s arrest, detention, and conviction represent a failure of leadership and a lack of understanding of the issues at stake.

Obi stressed that dialogue, constructive engagement, and inclusive governance should have been prioritized over coercion.

“The concerns Kanu raised were not unheard of. The issues for which he demanded solutions were not insoluble. It only required wisdom, empathy, and a willingness to listen,” he wrote.

He added that the government’s approach has deepened mistrust and created unnecessary distraction at a time when citizens are already overwhelmed by economic difficulties and insecurity.

Obi emphasized that leadership often demands more than the mechanical application of the law, citing examples of political solutions and negotiated settlements used globally to preserve peace and stability.

Calling for unity and reconciliation, Obi urged the Presidency, the Council of State, and credible statesmen to rise to the occasion and work towards lasting solutions.

“If we truly desire a new Nigeria, a united, peaceful, and progressive one, our leaders must choose healing over hostility, reconciliation over retaliation, and dialogue over division,” he said.
