Olaniyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, has passed away.
He reportedly collapsed and died in Abuja on Monday evening after attending a meeting with other RECs at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters.
The incident occurred shortly after Ijalaye had returned to his hotel room.
Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, stated that the meeting centered on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.
Ijalaye, a native of Ondo State, was said to have been in high spirits and actively participated in the meeting before his sudden death later that evening.
He had assumed his role as the REC for Ogun State in March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State.
