EFCC: Former Ogun Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, Two Others Face N2.5bn Fraud Charges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged the former Speaker of the Ogun House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, and two other officials of the assembly with fraud involving N2.5 billion.

The EFCC alleged that Oluomo, who was impeached by 18 out of 26 lawmakers last week, diverted the funds while he was the Speaker in 2022.

The other accused are the Clerk of the House, Taiwo Adeyemo, and the Director of Finance, Oladayo Samuel.

The trio appeared before the Federal High Court in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, on Monday, but the case was adjourned to February 29 and March 1, as the counsel for the EFCC was absent.

The presiding judge, Justice Agatha Okeke, ordered them to remain on bail until the next hearing. They had earlier pleaded not guilty and surrendered their travel documents to the court.

Oluomo has challenged his impeachment as illegal and filed a suit at the state high court to reverse it.

He was accused by his colleagues of financial misappropriation, highhandedness, gross misconduct, arrogance, poor leadership style, lack of focus and transparency, and pitching members against themselves.

The EFCC had arrested and arraigned Oluomo in September 2022, in suit no: FHC/AB/61C/2022, for allegedly forging receipts and signatures to siphon billions of naira from the legislative house.
