Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo sociocultural group, has defended the recent purchase of a new presidential jet by Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing safety concerns as a primary reason.
The new Airbus A330, reportedly costing around N150 billion, has sparked a range of reactions across the country.
Critics have questioned the decision, particularly given Nigeria’s current economic challenges. However, some argue that the new jet is necessary, especially after reports that the older Boeing B737-700, acquired during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, had previously malfunctioned.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to Tinubu on Information and Strategy, explained that the acquisition followed an investigative hearing by Nigeria’s parliament, which raised concerns about the safety and cost efficiency of the old jet, especially after its failure during a trip to Saudi Arabia.
Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, supported the move in a statement on Thursday, emphasizing that the safety of Tinubu is of utmost importance.
He stated, “the tragic incidents involving the untimely deaths of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Malawi’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that can befall high-ranking officials when adequate measures are not taken to ensure their safety.
“We cannot afford to have a similar tragedy occur in Nigeria, and we must prioritize the well-being of Tinubu,” he added.
Isiguzoro also criticized those attacking the presidency over the jet purchase, questioning their silence when members of the 10th National Assembly acquired luxurious cars. He urged Tinubu to respond to the concerns of Nigerians and take action to alleviate their suffering.
