Former Super Eagles captain, Austine Jay Jay Okocha, has criticized the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), pointing out the challenges it poses to players and clubs.
Traditionally held in the middle of the European season, AFCON‘s scheduling has led to tensions between clubs and participating countries. The tournament aligns with FIFA’s calendar, necessitating the release of players by clubs 14 days before its commencement.
Okocha, a key figure in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON victory, contends that hosting the competition in the midst of the season is unjust.
“They’ve made it so difficult for African players by playing in January or starting the season and winter break very, very early,” Okocha told BBC Sport Africa.

He called for collaborative efforts to find a solution that does not adversely impact players or clubs.
The upcoming 2023 AFCON finals, scheduled to take place in Cote d’Ivoire, are set to run from January 13 to February 11.
