AFCON: Okonjo-Iweala, Peter Obi, Kanu, Others React to Super Eagles’ Victory Over South Africa

Several Nigerian celebrities have responded to the Super Eagles’ victory over South Africa in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match.

The encounter, which took place on Wednesday, saw Nigeria emerge triumphant over the Bafana Bafana in a thrilling penalty shootout, securing a 4-2 win, with Stanley Nwabali’s heroics in goal saving two crucial penalties.

Despite the match ending in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, Jose Peseiro’s team prevailed, setting up a final showdown against Ivory Coast this weekend.

Peter Obi, expressing his joy on Twitter after the game, remarked, “Today marked another glorious chapter for Nigeria as our Super Eagles demonstrated incredible resilience, defeating South Africa’s Bafana Bafana to advance to the AFCON finals.”

Nigerian football legend Nwankwo Kanu shared his excitement, tweeting, “Can you believe it? What an exhilarating feeling… The Super Eagles soar high. Ready to soar into the finals. #afcon2023 We’re right here.”

Meanwhile, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), celebrated the victory, stating, “Mission accomplished!! Our very own @NGSuperEagles have done it. Congratulations!! You have brought smiles to all our faces.

“Let me also extend my congratulations to our South African brothers in @BafanaBafana for their brave performance. Let’s now move forward together.”

Similarly, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivo, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Lagos in the 2023 elections, commended the Super Eagles’ valiant effort, saying, “Indeed, they ran without growing weary, they fought like warriors, and have brought honor to our nation. Well done, Senior man!!

“On a lighter note, with the way my heart was pounding, may we not experience heartbreak at this age.”
