Senator Monday Okpebholo, the gubernatorial candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, finds himself embroiled in a controversy surrounding conflicting birthdate declarations submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Documents obtained by the Peoples Gazette have uncovered discrepancies between the birthdates provided by Mr. Okpebholo in various official filings.
According to records, Mr. Okpebholo’s sworn declaration of age, submitted on March 24, 2024, states his date of birth as August 29, 1970. This declaration was supported by a statutory affidavit signed by his brother, Ojeifo Joseph Okpebholo.
However, discrepancies arise when compared to his West African School Certificate (WASC) result from 2008, also submitted to INEC on the same date.
In this document, Mr. Okpebholo lists his birthdate as August 29, 1972, contradicting the earlier 1970 date provided in his sworn affidavit.
Further complicating matters, Mr. Okpebholo’s voter registration profile on the INEC portal indicates a third birthdate, August 1, 1977, which stands in stark contrast to the previous dates submitted.

Under Section 29(6) of the Electoral Act 2022, the provision of false information in documents submitted to INEC could potentially disqualify a candidate and their party from participating in the election. If proven post-election, the candidate who garnered the second-highest number of valid votes would be declared the winner.
Despite these revelations, INEC maintains its neutrality in the matter, emphasizing that aggrieved parties have the option to seek legal recourse through the appropriate channels.
