New Edo Deputy Governor Pledges Loyalty to Obaseki, Vows No Power Struggle

Omobayo Godwins, the freshly appointed deputy governor of Edo State, assured unwavering support to Governor Godwin Obaseki, expressing his commitment to serve until the end of Obaseki’s eight-year tenure on November 12, 2024.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, Godwins emphasized his readiness to heed Obaseki’s directives without contention, emphasizing his willingness to learn and comply with his duties.

Godwins affirmed, “It’s okay with me. Life is a process. At 37+, I am already a deputy governor, it has improved my political outlook and I am not in a rush to clash with my governor. Whatever he says I should do, is what I will do. He knows my strength. So, I will dwell on my strength when it comes to adding value. Politically, I am learning on the job.”

Godwins assumed the role of deputy governor following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly, following the adoption of the report of Justice S. A. Omonua (retd)-led impeachment panel.

The panel, constituted by the Chief Judge of Edo State, was tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.

Eighteen out of the 20 lawmakers present during the plenary on Monday, April 8, 2024, voted in favor of Shaibu’s impeachment, while one opposed it.
