Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has announced his temporary departure from office due to medical reasons amid Ondo crisis.
The governor’s office released a statement on Tuesday, confirming that Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will serve as acting governor during Akeredolu’s absence.
Governor Akeredolu is set to begin his medical leave on December 13, following concerns over a recurring health issue believed to be cancer-related.
The governor has faced this health challenge throughout the year, and the upcoming medical leave marks another instance of seeking treatment abroad.
Despite suggestions from key political figures, including Bola Tinubu, for Akeredolu to resign, the governor has chosen to retain his position.
Tinubu’s recommendation came during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, aimed at resolving the ongoing political tension within the State.
The governor’s spokesperson, Richard Olatunde, stated that official documentation, including a letter of medical leave and a formal notice of power transfer, will be submitted to the House of Assembly in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution.

During Governor Akeredolu’s medical leave, Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa will assume the governor’s duties, ensuring the continuity of governance in Ondo State.
The governor expressed his appreciation for the continuous support from the citizens and reaffirmed his commitment to the state’s progress and prosperity.
The decision to maintain Akeredolu’s position has been met with resistance from his family, who have not taken steps to encourage his resignation.
This reluctance may contribute to the prolongation of the political unrest in the state. Governor Akeredolu has been notably absent from the public eye for over eight months, raising concerns about the stability of leadership in Ondo.
