Osun Assembly Approves Bill to Increase Retirement Age for Judicial Officers

The Osun House of Assembly has approved a legislative bill that raises the retirement age for judges and other judicial officers from 65 to 70 years.

The bill, titled ‘Osun State High Court and Customary Court of Appeal Registrars, Secretary to the State Judicial Council, State Counsels in the Ministry of Justice, State Magistrates and District Customary Courts’ Presidents Retirement Age Bill, 2023’, successfully passed its third reading during a plenary session at the assembly complex in Osogbo.

The Speaker of the assembly, Adewale Egbedun, announced that the final version of the bill will be prepared and sent to Governor Ademola Adeleke for his signature.

Additionally, Speaker Egbedun commended the assembly members for their diligent participation in the 2024 budget presentation and subsequent defense sessions conducted by various ministries, departments, and agencies across Osun.

The budget defense process spanned 11 days and involved presentations from 90 MDAs to the House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, under the leadership of Saheed Fatunmise.

Concluding the budget defense, the committee reviewed submissions from the Osun Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), as well as the Osun East, Osun West, and Osun Central Education District Offices.

The Osun Ministry of Culture and Tourism, along with the Osun Tourism Board and the Osun Council for Arts and Culture, were also among the last groups to present before the committee on Monday.
