The Alex Otti-led administration in Abia State has introduced a tax on churches for their signposts, a move that has stirred significant attention across the state, with numerous religious leaders expressing strong opposition.
The Abia State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) stated that Abia is the only state in Nigeria enforcing such a tax.
In a letter obtained by SaharaReporters, signed by CAN State Chairman Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and Secretary Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the organization warned that the Christian community might view the policy as “anti-church.”
They urged Governor Otti to reconsider and potentially reverse the decision.
“We passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency to carefully look into this matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the Body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti-church,” part of the letter read.

The CAN leadership also proposed a roundtable discussion with the state’s Christian leaders to seek an amicable resolution to the issue.
