Governor Alex Otti has announced plans to distribute 50 transformers to selected communities in the third quarter of the year as part of the ‘Light Up Abia’ initiative.
The Information Commissioner, Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a briefing on the outcome of the weekly executive council meetings held in Umuahia.
Kanu stated that the rural electrification initiative will be implemented across the three senatorial zones of the state.
Kanu stated, “It is appropriate to note that more than 2,500 solar-powered lights had been installed across the state, mainly between Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia.
“It will include such isolated institutions like Abia State University and some government and public buildings in the state.
“The state government is committed to ensuring that the programme is executed in all the nooks and crannies of Abia state.
Kanu noted that Otti’s government had warned persons who drove without plate numbers or with covered plate numbers to desist from such untoward behaviour or continue at their own risk.
“Of course, you know that with the heightened security situation we have now in the country, it would not be nice for anybody to be caught driving without proper plate numbers”, he added.

Kanu also revealed plans to resuscitate the rural electrification project in rural communities and to revamp the Ariaria and Ubakala water projects.
Addressing rumors about the withdrawal of the staff of office of Eze Aro the ninth, Eze Eberechukwu Oji, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the special adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, dismissed the claims.
He clarified that the staff of office of the newly crowned Eze Aro had not been withdrawn, as the government had not received any court order regarding the matter.#Otti
