Human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, has urged Nigerian pastors to stop using fear to manipulate and extort their congregants.
Effiong in a recent tweet, stated that he has never subscribed to the idea of compulsory or forced tithing, describing it as a misplaced doctrine.
He added that any suggestion that only those who pay tithes will prosper or make heaven is laughable and should not be taken seriously.
Effiong expressed his belief in giving to the needy and investing in humanity as more meaningful acts of service to God. While he does not pay tithes, he emphasized his readiness to support church projects financially when needed.

He said, “If a Church is embarking on a project and needs financial support, I can donate to the development of the project. However, I prefer providing needed material support directly than giving money.”
The lawyer urged religious leaders to abandon fearmongering tactics and instead focus on inspiring genuine acts of kindness and community service among their congregants.
