PDP Crisis: Northern Group Snubs Atiku, Endorses Wike as Party Leader

Amidst the ongoing crisis regarding the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a northern group has rebuffed the advances of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, in favor of endorsing Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

With just three days remaining until the crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC), the Arewa PDP Transparency Group has expressed discontent with the recent media skirmishes surrounding the appointment of the national leader of the primary opposition party.

They argue that such conflicts are unnecessary, asserting that Wike possesses the capacity to effectively steer the party towards success.

In a statement issued by Honorable Haruna Bature, the national chairman of the Arewa PDP Transparency Group, on Monday, it was emphasized that true leadership entails care, concern, and responsibility, and is not driven by self-interest, periodicity, or spontaneity.

The statement also highlighted the series of leadership crises that have plagued the PDP, leading to its loss of power at the national level from 2015 onwards.

“These Crises are largely self-inflicted due to insensitivity, lack of political vision, lack of care, concern and respect for the Vision of the Founding Fathers of the Party, and for the yearnings and aspirations of the Nigerian Citizenry. Charity, they say, begins at home. A Party whose Leadership cannot take care of its own and showing good leadership definitely cannot take care of Nigeria and offer good Leadership.

“We wish to particularly bring to the attention of the Leadership of the Party that the Fears by some PDP Leaders about His Excellency, Chief Barr. E. N. Wike’s appointment in an APC Government is born out of jealousy, hate, bitterness, bias and their blindness to the political reality that the failure by the PDP to ensure power rotation to the South led to its loss of power at the centre.

If such fears are genuine as they claim, why was the PDP still able to win Governorship and other elections in States across the Nation?”

Bature, as outlined in the statement released in Port Harcourt, observed that after evaluating the actions of these leaders, the “Arewa PDP Transparency Group” identifies a dearth of selfless leadership, periodic engagement based solely on political interests, exclusion, indifference, and a failure in managing the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Consequently, they formally support His Excellency, Chief Barr. Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike, CON, GSSRS, POS Africa, and Life Bencher, as the National Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party.
